An enormous granite rock has been eroded into step-like formations so that it appears as if numerous tatami mats have been laid down right up close to the opposite shore. The pure water creates sheet-like waterfalls as it flows. In the autumn, this gorge is a scenic spot for viewing fall foliage.
This mansion was built by a businessman from Iwate prefecture. The greenery viewed from the corridor soothes the spirit, and you can enjoy tea and Japanese sweets served inside. In the fall, the colored leaves are illuminated.
This picturesque gorge has an abundance of nature, including the largest Meoto (husband and wife) rocks in Japan created by erosion, Ogami Rock and Megami Rock, and Ohogake (eroded cliff). As you approach Basen Bridge, you'll see the spectacular fall colors of deciduous trees along the gorge.
A 27-kilometer road covered with snow during winter is cleared to make a path and as you drive through the "Snow Corridor", you can see the tall wall of snow on both sides. Open: Mid-April to late May. Depending on the forecast, the roads may be closed to traffic.
With the majestic view of Mt. Iwate as the background, the scenery of a lone Sakura tree standing with dignity in the blue fields gives off a beautiful picture. You can see cows grazing and the calming atmosphere heals your heart. Best time to view: Early to mid-May
A facility where you can personally witness seasonal flowers bloom and interact with the animals like the Alpacas and rabbits to cite a few. In addition to meals using vegetables grown at the farm, you can also experience picking strawberries in spring at early June.
A facility where you can enjoy the experience of "Handicraft making". Artisans who practice dyeing and ironware-making gather here so you can see them as they practice their craft and you can purchase their products as well. The Iwate prefecture's cold noodles and rice cracker (Senbei) making is also popular here.
There is a line of Sakura trees that spans for 2 kilometers along the Kitakami riverside. During the 10th of April and the 7th of May when the Sakura festival is held, the upper reaches of the river are decorated with the traditional Japanese "carp streamer" decoration and ferries can be found sailing as well. Best time to view: Late April
A park with buildings that recreates Japan's history and dubbed as "Michinoku (Tohoku) Hollywood" because historical dramas are taped on this place. You can wear a traditional kimono and have a commemorative photo taken.
At the National Route 397 that crosses Iwate Prefecture in Oshu city, there's a section of the highway called the "Sakura Corridor" where Sakura trees are lined up to 7 km. A festival is also held depending on the season, and it is lighted up beautifully at night. Best time to view: Late April
A beautiful, 2 kilometer gorge where you can see a beautiful view of snow-water flowing through, and complemented with blooming Sakura. There is a popular dumpling shop known as "Flying Dango" on the other side of the stream where you place and receive your order with a basket via a line crossing the gorge.
